Geospatial Solutions works in partnerships with other council departments to manage council infrastructure and improve council services. Here are some examples of council GIS projects which Geospatial Solutions has been involved in:
Natural Disaster Risk Management
There are currently four Natural Disaster Risk Management Studies being undertaken by council, and Geospatial Solutions is a key partner in providing the digital data and analysis used to model potential impacts. The main emphasis of these studies has been in the area of improving council's capabilities in the area of disaster management, and information from the studies will be used to update the Townsville Local Disaster Management Plan in line with new State Government requirements. Property owners, real estate agents and insurance companies will also have access to accurate flood information over much of Townsville. The four studies are:
- Townsville Regional Flood Hazard Assessment Study
- Tropical Cyclone Surge, Wave Impact and Inundation Study within Townsville
- Natural Disaster Risk Management Study
- Storm Tide Pilot Study for EPA
Geospatial Solutions also contributed mapping and analysis to the council's Urban Stormwater Quality Management Plan.
Asset Capture
Council assets (including water, wastewater and stormwater, parks and recreational infrastructure) have been captured with assistance from Geospatial Solutions. Geospatial Solutions' digital orthophotos (aerial photographs) have been overlaid with Construction and Maintenance asset information (such as kerbs and channels) to identify any assets that have not been captured within the corporate GIS system. Missing asset information is then extracted (digitised) from the orthophotos.
Waste Management
Geospatial Solutions has worked with Waste Management to capture waste management assets, such as litter bins, bulk bins and toilet facilities around Townsville, and map waste collection and street cleaning services. Network analysis has been used to determine the best possible waste collection routes.
Mosquito Mapping
Geospatial Solutions environmental and natural resource data is used to predict the distribution of mosquitoes and compare them against recorded mosquito sites. Spatial analysis and mapping is essential in the effective delivery of the council's mosquito management program, and enables Environmental Health Services officers to focus aerial treatments and monitoring in predicted mosquito sites, helping to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
